Autoimmune conditions such as eczema and psoriasis usually start with some "warning" health problems. In my early to mid teens , I would spend months waking up in the middle of the night and sitting on the bathroom floor as I felt so nauseous. I would go to school in the morning and my friends would say “You are ACTUALLY GREEN, are you ok?” Needless to say, I was NOT ok.
Then in my late teens, the inside of my ear was really itchy and flaky. When I went to the doctor, she said I had eczema in my ear and prescribed steroid cream but who wants to put goop in their ear?! So, I just lived with it. But, it spread to my face and scalp.
I ate a typical western diet – packaged foods, pasta, bread, and cereal. I didn’t ever think that was making me so sick and I certainly didn’t realize how much just changing my diet could help, until I tried it and it did! Now, I am no longer plagued by eczema!
My Dad was the one who kick started my passion for nutrition. I started learning about what is in our food around the age of 13. I had been making kombucha with my Dad since I was about 10, so when it became mainstream I thought to myself, “I have known about this stuff for 20 years!”
However, it wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I started doing my own research and learning all I could about nutrition. I adopted a "mostly" paleo lifestyle and knew I was finally on the right track with my nutrition but there was always something missing.
After watching a documentary series on the Microbiome and Functional Medicine, I knew I had found exactly what I had been searching for. To me, this not only explained what nutrition should be but what health care should be!
Sadly, my Dad passed away March 2019 and while it has been the toughest experience it has also been the most motivating. It has motivated me to share my knowledge with the world. To teach people that we don’t have to watch ourselves or our loved ones suffer from autoimmune disease. To show people that there is a better way and it’s called Functional Medicine – and its not some woo-woo hippy dippy thing.
It’s real HEALTH care, backed by real science and studies, and practiced by real doctors. THIS is the health care that should be taught in medical schools because currently, people go to school for 11-15 YEARS to become a doctor, but only 8 HOURS of that training is about nutrition.
Doctors look at autoimmune disease and say food has nothing to do with it, but it DOES. I, as an individual, might not be able to change the current health care system, but I can share my knowledge and help the people who are suffering.
If you are dying to know some of those fun little facts, here are 5 things you may not know about me.
1. That dog in the photo is my furry little side kick! His name is Crixus. Spartacus and Crixus were gladiators and fought in the slave rebellion together, and my dog Crixus is my little gladiator.
2. I love getting out in nature - especially hiking and being in, on or near water.
3. I had never been on an airplane until I was 31.
4. I love to sing and even tried out for Canadian Idol back in the day.
5. In my early 20s (you know, when you normally want to be out socializing with your friends) I moved to the middle of nowhere on 150 acres with solar power, running cold water in the summer (no hot water and the pipes froze in the winter), a composting toilet, and INSIDE the cabin was -2C during the peak of winter (outside it was -40C).
Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food.
